#11 - My iPod

iPod Nano, 3rd Generation

Chances are if you run into me on any given day in public, I have my iPod in my front pocket and my earbuds attached to my head. Prior to getting my iPod for Christmas 2007, I had gone through countless cheap-o MP3 players. My iPod is my favorite electronic, maybe even my favorite worldly possession.

I love the shape of the 3rd generation nano above any other generations. The almost square shape is perfect. It’s not as flashy as the iPod Touch, or carry as much as the iPod classic, but those are so huge and bulky. I just needed something I could through in my pocket and go, and it does what I need it to do: catalogue and play my music.

And it makes me happy.

#10 - Anime

Subaru Sumeragi of 'X'

I’ve always had this massive love for anime, ever since I was a kid. I had of this beta tape of “Warriors of the Wind”, which I played over and over again when I was a kid, much to my young brother’s dismay. It was a little dark for a kid to be watching, so he’d often hide it on me so I couldn’t watch it. I loved the form of animation, but in high school it took on a whole new face. In high school I found Noir and my all time favorite, X, after which I basically became an anime nerd. In the past few months I’ve actually gotten back into it.

I love anime. I think it’s absolutely beautiful, and some of the series and movies are incredibly deep, and delve into subjects that I find incredivbly interesting. X, in particular explores death, the end of the world, and religion. The action scenes can be absolutely breathtaking. Yes, it’s geeky, but I think we’re all entitled to a couple nerdy things. Watching an anime is always an experience for me; whether it’s provoking me or just making me feel like a kid.

And it makes me happy.

#9 - Lawrencetown Beach

Located just outside Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Lawrencetown Beach has been one of my favorite places since birth. There are few places that have had a larger impact on my life. For most people the beach is about sunshine, tanning and swimming, but for me Lawrencetown is a very different place.

I’ve spent countless evenings walking the boardwalks talking and thinking. This is my dramatic stomping ground: Life changing conversations always seemed to take place on a calm night at that beach (Conrad’s Beach was more of the private-take-a-crush-there kind of beach… but those are other stories…). Lawerencetown Beach is a beautiful, calming place where I can’t help but reflect. I feel like I know myself more when I’m there.

And it makes me happy.

#8 - The Arafat (aka Desert Scarf or Keffiyeh)

This is not me.

I visited Urban Outfitters for the first time in May 2007. Montreal. I was baffled by how freaking cool the place looked (we had nothing like it backEast). One thing that stuck out were the desert scarves. I didn’t have the money to pick one up, and didn’t see them again until I started working at D-Tox (where we called them arafats) a year later. Yeah, Nova Scotia’s a little behind the times.

I’ll ignore the fact that they have become a massive craze and every 13-year-old-The-Hills-loving-girl owns one. Back when they first came around they were almost a quiet symbol of status: Your were a hipster. You were indie. Obviously this has changed now, but when I first got mine I felt ten times cooler when I put it on. Does that make me a slave to the scene? Probably. Fortunately, I don’t give a damn. They can still complete a look, and I still feel a little more fashion forward when wearing one.

And it makes me happy.

#7 - Your Garbage

Table & Chair set. Sweet!

I think this stems from growing up with my father. My father never through anything out, and figured everything had its worth. “Your garbage is someone else’s treasure.” Someone else being me, of course.

I’ve found everything from cases of cassette tapes to massive fish tanks, shelves, deck sets, table/chair sets (pictured above), and even a small light table. Honestly, I feel like I’m finding diamonds in the rough… discovering secrets no one else knows about.

And it makes me happy.

#6 - Golden Grahams

A vintage box of golden grahams (before my time)

True story: You can’t buy Golden Grahams on the East Coast of Canada anymore. I don’t know when this atrocity took place, I just remember one day going to buy Golden Grahams and finding none. It’s a tragedy, really.

Golden Grahams is one of my favorite cereals, and has been for as long as I can remember. I was the grocery one day here in Toronto and saw a box of it. I bought it and ate it within two days. GG is the bomb. There’s not much you can really say about it except it tastes so damn good, and the milk tastes even better when the cereal’s gone.

And it makes me happy.

#5 - The Horror Movie Section

Horror on VHS: Classic

As a child there’s was that one thing you weren’t allowed to do, and it drove you crazy. Not being allowed to do it only makes you want to do it more. In my case I was forbidden to watch horror movies. The closest thing I could get to them was the horror movie section at my local video store. Every time I would go to it (which was often), I would head straight to the horror section and fantasize about what I could only see on a box.

I grew up, and my love of horror movies blossomed into an insatiable appetite for the dark, bizarre, fantastic, and macabre. Now with the internet and torrents the selection is endless, but I still get excited when I see a horror movie section at a video store, especially if they’re on VHS. I’m still fascinated by every cover and the pictures on the back. It makes me feel like a kid again.

And it makes me happy.

#4 - Tazo's "Zen" Green Tea

"A harmonious blend with lemongrass & spearmint"

I was first introduced to green tea while working at Smitty’s, a breakfast restaurant. I found our how healthy it was and I wanted to drink it every morning. Then, one my boss/the owner (props, Heather!) brought in this newgreen tea, “Zen” by a company called Tazo.

It wasn’t until later that I realized all the hipster drank it at Starbucks (and paid obscene prices for it; as an employee at Smitty’s I got it for free). Now I can even buy it at my local grocery! There’s something about drinking this brand of green tea. Maybe it’s the lemongrass or maybe it’s the spearmint (aw, heck, I have no idea what I’m talking about). It just tastes great and it actually chills me out.

And it makes me happy.

#3 - Belt Buckles

Space Invader - Black & Gold

Belt buckles are a new thing for me. I only started wearing them over the past year. They’re a subtle way to up my hipster levels (or in my case geek levels, with my space invader, cassette tape, and *gasp* Darth Vader belt buckles). But. Don’t buy star belt buckles. They stab you (true story)..

They’re the coolest thing to show off and easiest thing to hide, much like a tattoo, minus the sagging/distortion over time. Even when I wear a suit, know that there’s a kick ass belt buckle hiding under that dress shirt. It gives me cred.

And it makes me happy.

#2 - Gizmo

My toy gizmo

“Gremlins” was a movie I’ve been watching since birth. I was the closest thing to a horror movie I was allowed to watch until my teens. Although it was the source of most of my childhood nightmares, I watched it all the time. One reason being Gizmo.

He’s cute, he’s furry, he’s fun. Gizmo was what you wanted every pet to be (minus the evil mutating spawns). The toy I have of him I’ve had for as long as I can remember and it has always been one of my favorite toys. It still is. I have the one pictured above along with a plush I bought last year. Gizmo has been the coolest.

And it makes me happy.
